In a game of rallies, it was the Dallas Mavericks who made the last run. Clinging to a 94-90 lead in the fourth quarter, Dallas used a 17-0 run to put the final nail in the coffin of the visiting Orlando Magic, ultimately winning 111-96 on Wednesday night at the American Airlines Center.
The Mavericks (24-29) used a balanced attack, as Shawn Marion and Elton Brand tallied 17 points apiece, with Marion adding eight rebounds. Meanwhile, Vince Carter had 14 points and eight rebounds, O.J. Mayo scored 13 points, and Dirk Nowitzki finished with 12 points and nine boards. Mike James notched 12 points, Darren Collison recorded nine points and nine assists, and Brandon Wright scored eight points and pulled down eight rebounds.
Orlando (15-39), which has lost 25 of its last 28 games and three straight, was led by 21 points and seven assists from Arron Afflalo, while Moe Harkless registered 20 points, Nikola Vucevic totaled 16 points to go with 13 rebounds and Andrew Nicholson and J.J. Redick scored 10 points apiece.
Dallas outshot the Magic 42 of 88 (47.7%) to 39 of 85 (45.9%) from the field, 11 of 29 (37.9%) to 5 of 16 (31.3%) from 3-point range and 16 of 18 (88.9%) to 13 of 22 (59.1%) from the free-throw line. The Mavericks outrebounded Orlando 44-43, but the Magic held a 44-36 advantage on points in the paint.
After being outscored 42-30 in the first quarter, Orlando won the second period 23-17 and the third period 29-24 before being doubled up 28-14 in the fourth.
"For me, it's just annoying, if anything," Redick said of the trade rumors that have surrounded him over the past few weeks. "No matter what happens, I want to play and not deal with this. It comes with the territory I guess. It's for the birds, though."
The shooting guard finished 3 of 12 from the floor, including 1 of 5 from behind the arc.
"Three-way trade, Cincinnati Reds, Ravens and the Magic," Redick joked. "We're getting Flacco in a three-way trade. … I'm going to the Reds to play second base."
Orlando is at Memphis on Friday at 8:00 pm on FS Florida.
