Rinse, wash, repeat. That's what it has been for the Orlando Magic, although "lose, lose, lose" is a phrase that more appropriately describes what the squad has went through over the past few weeks. Orlando's latest defeat came at the hands of the Portland Trail Blazers, who won 125-119 in overtime on Monday night at the Rose Garden.
"The games we're losing, we're in all of them," Magic guard Jameer Nelson said. "They're close games and hard fought but we just keep coming up short."
Portland (19-15) was led by 27 points and 10 rebounds from LaMarcus Aldridge, while Wesley Matthews had 24 points and J.J. Hickson added 20 points and 15 rebounds. Damian Lillard finished with 18 points and 10 assists and Nicolas Batum notched 16 points and 10 assists.
For the Magic (12-22), J.J. Redick made 11 of 17 shots, including 6 of 10 from three-point range, en route to a 29-point effort. Arron Afflalo (24 points), Nelson (21 points and 12 assists), Nikola Vucevic (17 points and 13 rebounds), and Josh McRoberts (12 points, eight rebounds, and six assists) were also in double figures for Orlando.
The Trail Blazers made 48 of 94 (51.1%) shots from the field and 8 of 24 (33.3%) from downtown, whereas Orlando was 46 of 93 (49.5%) from the field and 11 of 30 (36.7%) from behind the arc. Portland outrebounded the Magic 44-36 and held a 60-44 advantage on points in the paint.
After outscoring the Magic 25-24 in the first quarter, Portland was beaten 33-23 in the second period. The Trail Blazers outscored Orlando 37-28 in the third frame to tie things at 85-all and both teams registered 23 points in the fourth quarter to force overtime. In the extra session, the hosts won 17-11.
"Our effort was unbelievable," Magic coach Jacque Vaughn said. "We didn't get the win but at the end of the day we put in the work. Tough loss, but our guys did some amazing things tonight. They deserved to win that game."
Orlando is at Denver on Wednesday at 9:00 pm on FS Florida.
